Teaching for Transformation

At Foothill Christian School, we believe that learning should be deeply meaningful, faith-filled, and purpose-driven. That’s why we use a framework called Teaching for Transformation (TfT)—an approach that helps students see every subject as part of God’s bigger story. Rather than a curriculum, TfT shapes how and why we teach, anchoring each lesson in a Christian worldview and pointing students toward lives of purpose and service.

TfT is centered around four core practices: Deep Hope, Storyline, Throughlines, and Formational Learning Experiences (FLEx).

Our teachers have gone through a two-year training period to equip and empower them to incorporate this framework into their classrooms. To begin, each teacher writes a personal Deep Hope, a vision for the kind of person they long for their students to become. These hopes act as guiding stars, connecting classroom learning to faith and life goals. Students often create their own Deep Hopes as well, which invites them to reflect on who God is shaping them to be.

Each classroom also features a unique Storyline that ties in daily lessons with God’s redemptive narrative. Whether it’s learning about creation, fall, redemption, or restoration, students are reminded that their education is not separate from their faith... it’s an essential part of it. Classroom displays and student work help bring these storylines to life throughout the year.

The language of Throughlines helps students live out their learning by developing Christ-like character. These “do-lines” highlight the kinds of disciples we hope students become—such as justice-seekers, servant-workers, or beauty-creators. Throughlines are woven into class discussions, chapel messages, and weekly “Chapel Chats” sent home to help parents stay connected and nurture these values at home.

Finally, Formational Learning Experiences (FLEx) allow students to apply what they’ve learned through hands-on service projects that meet real needs for real people.
Whether it’s launching a student-led kindness initiative during recess, raising funds for missions through recycling, or hosting a thank-you brunch for those who serve them (as our 3rd graders did last year), students are empowered to turn their learning into action.

At its heart, Teaching for Transformation is more than a teaching method, it's a way of forming students into Christ-centered, purpose-driven people. It shapes our classrooms, our culture, and our calling as a school community!
